7 Most Common Pay-Per-Click Landing Page Mistakes

Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC) is still fairly new, but if you want to make money online, then you will need to get yourself up to speed fast. Keep in mind, however, that because this advertising method is relatively new, many online business owners make some relatively costly mistakes when developing their PPC campaign.

One of the most common overlooked areas of setting up a pay-per-click advertising campaign where mistakes are made, is not in the keywords, or ads themselves, but in the ppc campaign landing pages.

Landing pages have been around since the birth of the Internet. People have used them for collecting your name and email address and for selling you something. A landing page is simply the page you are sending your visitors to after they click on your ad.

Let’s take a look, then, at the 7 most common pay-per-click landing page mistakes:

Let’s say you’ve set up your PPC campaign and it’s now live and running. You’ve gotten someone to click on your pay-per-click ad.  The hard work is done, and reeling in the sale should be easy, right?

Not if you’ve made the common landing page mistakes shown below:

PPC Landing Page Mistake#1 - You’re using your homepage as the landing page

You’ve written a compelling pay-per-click ad for your offer that convinced someone to click on the link and it takes them to … your home page?  Now, your visitors are expected to search thorugh a maze of pages to find the product they were interested in when they clicked on your ad.

Instead, make sure that your potential customers are being sent to a landing page which will take them exactly where you want them to be – where it is easiest to convert them into a sale.

PPC Landing Page Mistake#2 - You don’t have a converting landing page

You have a landing page, but it is so generic that is might as well be your homepage.  For every different product you’re promoting, there should be a different landing page to direct them towards the sale.  They clicked on the link because they were interested – make sure the right information is waiting for them when they get to your site.

PPC Landing Page Mistake#3 - Your landing page is too cluttered

You don’t want a customer arriving to your site after seeing a clear and concise pay-per-click ad only to be greeted by a confusing landing page trying to overload them with information.  Think about the action you want your customer to take; then edit and refine the information on the landing page to reflect that.

PPC Landing Page Mistake#4 - Your landing pages are not keyword-optimized

You’ve spent a lot of time and effort optimizing your pay-per-click ads, so why wouldn’t you do the same with your landing pages? For each list of keywords you have, you should have a corresponding pay-per-click ad and landing page.  Maintain a consistency in communication with your customers at all times.

PPC Landing Page Mistake#5 - You’re asking for too much information

You want to get as much information as possible from your potential customer, but be wary of scaring them away by requiring personal information right away.  Many people are not comfortable giving their last names to a site they are not familiar with.  Unless they are making a purchase, keep the information required to their first name and email address only.

PPC Landing Page Mistake#6 - You have too many images and it takes forever for your page to load

You don’t want to lose a customer after they’ve made he decision to click on an ad because they got impatient waiting for the page to load.  Cut out the extraneous images and keep the landing page streamlined so it will load quickly so you can capture the sale.

PPC Landing Page Mistake#7 - You’re selling, not telling

You did the selling with your pay-per-click ad.  The focus of the landing page should be on information and promoting the product, not a hard sell.  The customer is already interested in the product.  Make them feel comfortable with plenty of information about the product and how to obtain it, and encourage them to purchase without making them feel too pressured.

Conclusion:

Without an effective landing page, you could be undoing all the hard work you accomplished with your pay-per-click ad. Further in this article, I review a powerful product suite called PPC Kahuna that allows you to overcome every single one of the mistakes described above.

Let's take a look now at the process of designing an effective landing page for your ppc advertising campaigns.

Landing Page Design

Landing page selection and creation are vital to the success of both paid search advertising (e.g. PPC) and organic search marketing campaigns.

Landing pages can make or break the success of a campaign. Although they are an opportunity to seal the deal, landing page optimization is definitely not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Landing pages need to be created according to the needs of the reader. Not only should your landing page be very usable, it should also be naturally appealing to the eye.

Landing page design is all about making your visitors feel that they have found exactly what they were looking for and making it easy for them to make their next move. In fact, results show that the best landing pages are those that offer visitors multiple opportunities for leaving the page, but where all exit links point to the same destination (i.e. a sign-up, offer or buy page).

Landing pages are definitely not the place to have unnecessary, superfluous images. Make sure that every element on your landing page contributes to the result you intend your visitors to take when they land on your page.
Testing And Measuring The Effectiveness Of Your Landing Pages

After planning and designing your landing page, you should implement a testing and data analysis phase.

Make sure that you have implemented statistical tracking and conversion measuring tools so you can quickly identify which areas of your landing page work and which do not.

If you are building landing pages for organic search, then one of the best scripts available for tracking visitor behavior on your site is Google’s own Web Analytics, which you can download and install for free by visiting the Google Analytics section of the Google website.

If you are building landing pages for pay-per-click advertising, however, then you will need to be better equipped in terms of both tools and training, as poorly designed ppc landing pages can turn potentially profitable campaigns into very costly and unprofitable ones.
